Neoplasticism
In 2011, Katja Windau created an installation called The Cell of Piet M. Referring to Piet Mondriaan. The installation was made out of a large amount of leftover foam. The pieces of foam came from the padding for furniture industry and she was trying to think of new ways to reuse the waste. The Cell of Piet M. consisted of a wall covered in a strict arrangement of pastel foam parts creating a sort of pastel isolation cell.
Afterwards she took detail photos of the installation which she abstracted, mirrored and partially re-colored on the computer, creating a digital collage series called Schauma 2011. Looking at the photos you can clearly see the details and texture of the foam. Imagining touching those soft, squeaky pieces of foam gives me goosebumps!
